Since , Johnson has worked as a staff scientist in the bioinformatics section of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health, serving as the intramural resident bioinformatics subject-matter expert and mentor and performing omics-based research, training, and support. Notable career accomplishments to date include cofounding Gene Logic, the co-pioneering of predictive toxicogenomics, and the codevelopment of the NIH stem cell data management system.

Johnson holds five patents in the field of predictive toxicogenomics and one patent in the field of stroke diagnosis. He has multiple manuscripts published in nearly 30 different journals. Rana Khan is UMGC's vice dean of the information and technology systems program as well as a program chair in the graduate biotechnology program.

She has extensive research experience in molecular biology, working in both academia and the government. Her research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed science journals.
