It took about 3 hours, but I was successful. My guide has been edited to reflect what I did on November 28 - 30, ExtremeGrief: The KB update has to be delayed until a certain point in the process. If it's deployed too early, it breaks Windows Update and displays the error code. See the new guide for details. I did a new clean install and update on December 2nd and finally had success with the batch script and 2 servicing stack updates steps 26 and 28 and I went through the entire process again on December 3rd to make sure it was successful.

I would remove the whole step 2. The defender is not an obstacle to the update process in any way.
