Overall, approximately 50 percent of our graduates go on to additional fellowship training with the remainder entering the urology workforce as comprehensively trained general urologists. Residents are provided abundant opportunity to develop their clinical and surgical skills within a supervised environment, while developing the confidence to practice independently.
Residents spend clinical rotations in a variety of hospital settings. This allows for a diverse clinical experience, with the opportunity to provide care for patients afflicted by the most complex urological conditions, presenting from all corners of society both locally and throughout the North Texas region and beyond.

Training begins with an internship at UT Southwestern. Basic surgical skills training is also provided at the newly constructed Simulation Center at UT Southwestern. During the PGY-2 year, substantial time is devoted to diagnostic urologic skills, including endoscopy, ultrasound, and urodynamics.
The PGY-3 year offers a diverse introduction and expansion of open, robotic, and endourological surgical techniques. All call is taken from home; the time spent in the hospital is counted toward the weekly duty hours total.
The schedule is drawn up in such a way that each resident is not on call more than three nights in a row e. Excluding weekends, the schedule should be a one-in-four rotation when possible.
The faculty members involved with the project work with the resident to set a timetable for the research project. Each resident is required to complete a case study, a retrospective clinical study and prospective project for submission as a presentation and publication in a peer review journal.
Ample guidance for completion of the research project will be provided through the program director, research committee, faculty advisors and the director of research and education.

Rounds and nights on call give contact with inpatients, and time is spent in the operating room assisting and, as skills develop, performing surgery.
This rotation also allows the URO-2 resident to learn and participate in the initial evaluation, diagnosis, selection and implementation of therapies, and management of complications in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. It also gives the resident the opportunity to learn and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the outpatient setting and to gain surgical experience in the operating room setting. The URO-2 also spends time running the pediatric service with both outpatient and inpatient responsibilities as well as performing cases in the operating room.
The remaining rotations for the URO-3 include all aspects of services provided within the program in both outpatient, inpatient, and OR settings. The URO-4 year incorporates intensified experience in inpatient and operative urology.
Open, endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery are performed both as assistant and primary surgeon, with appropriate support from the chief resident and faculty.
